About this Podcast

She ran 70,000 km through Death Valley, the Sahara, and the Himalayas. Nothing in those 25 years prepared her for the day a doctor left her mother untreated for six hours with a brain aneurysm. Lisa Tamati built her entire athletic career on refusing what people said was impossible. When her mother survived the aneurysm only to be given a second verdict of irreversible brain damage, Lisa took her home against medical advice and started an eight-hour-a-day rehabilitation program from scratch. Two and a half years later, her mother had her driver's license back. Then brain cancer arrived. Doctors gave weeks. Four and a half years on, her mother is 84 and still going to the gym.

In this episode of the Legacy and Longevity Podcast, host Zach Dancel sits down with ultra-endurance athlete, author, and health advocate Lisa Tamati to explore what it actually looks like to fight for someone's life inside a system that keeps saying no. Lisa shares:

  • Why resilience is built through repetition and discipline rather than something people are simply born with.

  • How extreme endurance challenges train the ability to focus on the next step instead of being overwhelmed by what is ahead.

  • Why care giving can demand the same grit and stamina as elite athletic competition.

  • How the conventional medical system is structured in ways that work against prevention and deeper patient care.

  • Why advanced genetic testing changes the entire conversation around cancer treatment protocols.

  • How hyperbaric oxygen therapy, off-label drugs, and a 150-supplement daily protocol factored into her mother's recovery.

  • Why too much stress damages the body just as much as inactivity, and how to find the right threshold.

  • How compartmentalizing emotion becomes a survival skill in both endurance racing and medical crisis.

  • Why bringing the nervous system down matters more than pushing harder for high performers under load.

  • How personal health responsibility shifts the moment you stop waiting for the system to protect you.

You will hear why the mind quits long before the body does, why prevention is the hardest sell in healthcare, and why the athlete mentality is the most underused tool in the longevity playbook.
